Viral video of school girl smoking cannabis from Zimbabwe, not Nigeria – Police clarify

The Nigerian Police Force has provided clarification regarding a viral video that depicts school girls smoking Indian hemp (cannabis), which was reported to have taken place in Nigeria; however, it actually occurred in Zimbabwe.

In a statement issued this morning, Force spokesperson ACP Muyiwa Adejobi advised the public to be cautious when disseminating unverified information.

A video has surfaced that has raised considerable concern and anxiety among Nigerian parents and the broader community.

Nevertheless, an initial investigation into the video’s origins strongly indicates that it did not originate in Nigeria, with several signs suggesting that it likely comes from Zimbabwe.

The evidence backing this assertion includes the language used in the video.

The individuals featured can be heard speaking both English and Shona, the latter being a language primarily spoken in Zimbabwe and certain regions of southern Africa.

Importantly, there are no Nigerian languages or recognizable Nigerian accents present in the audio.

Adejobi noted that the original upload of the video contained a caption in Shona and was first shared on the Instagram account @rusape_celebs_tv, which is evidently based in Rusape, Zimbabwe.

He cautioned the public to exercise caution when sharing unverified information, particularly when it pertains to sensitive content that could have adverse effects on individuals, organizations, and entire communities.
