Tension gripped residents and students around the University of Benin after a young man was reportedly shot multiple times and killed near the institution’s main gate in Benin City, Edo State.
According to reports making rounds online, the incident happened on Sunday afternoon around 4 p.m. near the Ugbowo campus entrance.
The deceased, identified simply as “Junior,” was said to be a part-time final-year student from Ubaja. Reports alleged that he worked as an “Aza man” and was involved in handling funds connected to online fraud activities.
Sources claimed the attack may have been linked to an alleged ₦70 million dispute after the victim reportedly withheld money said to belong to fraud operators.
Eyewitnesses alleged that gunmen driving in a plateless Mercedes vehicle opened fire on the victim’s Mercedes GLK SUV near the school gate.
Videos circulating online showed the victim slumped inside the vehicle with visible blood stains after allegedly attempting to reverse and escape from the attackers.
Two other occupants of the vehicle, including a female passenger and another male, were reportedly injured during the shooting and later rushed to a hospital for treatment.
The incident reportedly caused panic around the busy axis, with many students and traders fleeing the scene for safety.
University authorities were said to have clarified that the incident occurred outside the school premises and was not directly connected to activities within the campus.
