Nollywood actor and politician Desmond Elliot has sparked conversations online after speaking about his loyalty to his political party and why he refused suggestions to move elsewhere politically.
In a recent statement, the Surulere lawmaker explained that he remains loyal to the party that gave him political relevance and would willingly step aside if asked to do so.
According to him:
“So many people have called and said, ‘Hey, go to another party.’ I said, ‘Go to another party? How? Daddy picked me from nowhere. If the party says, “Desmond, you have done well, go and sit down,” I will sit down and support whoever the party picks.’”
His comments quickly generated reactions online, with many Nigerians questioning whether elected officials should prioritize loyalty to political parties or to the people they represent.
Reacting to the statement, @aii_stephen wrote:
“The party says? Are you representing the party or the people? What sort of nonsense are we doing in the name of democracy?”
Another user, @WudiSnipper, criticized the actor-turned-politician, saying:
“And this one claim to be representing the people of Surulere. Someone came on live TV to admit that he could be controlled like a robot.”
Some users, however, believed Desmond Elliot’s position reflected political discipline and loyalty.
@ibeawuchi_emma commented:
“That is a good party man. Not that one that said it is either him or nothing. You did well Desmond.”
Others suggested that the lawmaker was attempting to rebuild trust within his political camp.
@MohammedPopson wrote:
“He knows fully well that he messed up and the better way to make an amendment is to remain in the party, shield his ambition for this coming election, and win leaders’ trust again.”
Another user, @Jikason94, argued that the statement reflected a lack of independent ambition.
“Fair enough, but it only shows lack of ambition from you. It says so much about you, working for daddy than working for the people.”
