The family of Abdullahi Bello has demanded justice after the young man was allegedly killed by a mob that mistook him for a Fulani herdsman in the Rantiya community of Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Speaking on the tragic incident, his sister, Hannatu Bello, recounted how she received a phone call from a police officer using her brother’s phone, informing her that he had been found unconscious and taken to a hospital in Dadin Kowa.
According to her, she immediately rushed to the hospital with their mother, where they found Bello lying unconscious.
“I asked the Investigating Police Officer if he was okay, but he told me to come to the hospital. I took our mother with me, and we met him unconscious.”
Hannatu said the Investigating Police Officer explained that officers on patrol at about 3:00 a.m. received information from local vigilantes that Bello had been attacked by people who allegedly mistook him for a Fulani man.
Describing the injuries her brother sustained, she said the attack was brutal.
“From what we saw on his body, he was macheted and strangled, with blood coming from his mouth. The IPO asked if the deceased was Fulani. I said no. He was not Fulani. He was my blood brother and we are not Fulani.”
She condemned the killing, describing it as inhumane, and said her brother’s physical appearance may have led to the mistaken identity.
The family has appealed to the Plateau State Police Command to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident, trace Bello’s phone records, identify those responsible, and ensure they are prosecuted.
