The Kano State Fire Service has recalled tragedies that happened in the state between January 1 and December 31, 2020.

While speaking with newsmen in Kano on Tuesday, January 5, Alhaji Saidu Muhammad, the state Public Relations Officer of the service, revealed that no fewer than 134 people died while about N635 million worth of properties were destroyed by fire in the last year.

The PRO explained further that the service had saved property worth N2.56 billion and 1,077 lives in 786 fire outbreaks in the last twelve months.

 “Most of the fire outbreaks were caused by carelessness in handling cooking gas, use of inferior electrical appliances and poor wiring in homes,” he said.

He added:

“About 134 lives and property worth N635 million were lost to fire in the period under review.”

The service recorded 693 rescue calls out of which 184 are false alarms, Gistlover understands.

Assuring residents of the service’s commitment to do better in 2021, Muhammad noted that the service plans to retrain its 350 staff in 2021 for effective performance.
