Nollywood actor and filmmaker Deyemi Okanlawon has shared his thoughts on what he describes as Nigeria’s tendency to celebrate average performance while overlooking excellence.

During a recent appearance on the Dear Ife podcast, the actor noted that individuals with fewer skills or qualifications often seem to attain greater levels of success than those who consistently demonstrate competence and professionalism.

Okanlawon stated that the environment in Nigeria can be discouraging for people who are committed to delivering quality work, as merit and expertise are not always recognized or rewarded accordingly.

He also suggested that maintaining strict professional standards may sometimes become a disadvantage, arguing that the system does not consistently favor hardworking and highly capable individuals despite their efforts.

His words…

“In a country where mediocrity reigns, you can’t be too serious. I joked in a country of mad people, you can’t be same and you’re going to succeed.

“I have realised that you have to tone your intellect down a lot to succeed here,”.
