Nigeria’s former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has raised fresh concerns over the increasing rate of schoolchildren abductions in the country, describing the situation as heartbreaking and dangerous for the future of education in Nigeria.
Speaking in a Children’s Day message, Obi said the celebration was overshadowed by the painful reality that many Nigerian children remain trapped in captivity years after being kidnapped from their schools.
The former Anambra State governor lamented that images and stories of abducted pupils continue to surface online, reflecting the persistent insecurity troubling the nation.
He criticized the repeated attacks on educational institutions and expressed disappointment over the inability of authorities to guarantee the safety of students and teachers across the country.
According to Obi, learning cannot flourish in an atmosphere where children attend school in fear or risk being kidnapped while pursuing education.
He described the continued detention of abducted schoolchildren as a national embarrassment and evidence of the deep security crisis affecting Nigeria.
Obi further noted that many affected families are still living in emotional pain as they wait endlessly for the return of their children.
He warned that any nation that fails to protect its young people from criminal activities risks damaging its image and losing moral standing before the international community.
Calling the situation unacceptable, Obi urged the government and relevant security agencies to take immediate and decisive steps toward restoring safety in schools nationwide.
He added that Children’s Day, which should ordinarily be a period of happiness and celebration for young people, now serves as a painful reminder of the country’s unresolved duty to protect its children.
