“I Was Dropped Because I Was Not Igbo” – Moses Simon Alleges Tribalism at Enugu Rangers

  • Super Eagles star Moses Simon has alleged that Enugu Rangers denied him a professional contract because he was not Igbo, despite spending three months at the club and impressing during his trial.
  • According to the winger, he was later told his ethnic background influenced the decision, making it an experience he had never spoken about publicly until now.

Super Eagles winger Moses Simon has opened up about an alleged experience of tribalism that he says denied him a professional contract at Enugu Rangers during the early stages of his football career.

Speaking on Urban Dwells Sports, Simon revealed that he spent three months on trial with the club and impressed on the pitch, but was eventually released because he was not of Igbo origin.

“I never told anyone this story before, but it’s crazy. That year, I was dropped because I was not Igbo. It wasn’t because of my game; it was just tribalism.”

The Nantes forward recalled that while he was still waiting for a contract, another player joined the team, trained for only one week, and was immediately signed.

“I had been there for three months. An Igbo guy came, I’ve forgotten his name. He trained for one week and they signed him to a professional contract. I had been there for months. I was even his captain.”

Simon said he was later informed that his ethnic background influenced the club’s decision.

“They said it was because you are from the North.”

The footballer described the experience as one he had never publicly shared before, saying it remains one of the most difficult moments of his early career.
