Former Bayelsa State Governor and Senator, Seriake Dickson, has warned politicians against using political parties as mere platforms to win elections before defecting to another party.
Dickson made the statement while speaking about loyalty within the NDC, stressing that the party would not tolerate politicians who decamp after securing electoral victory.
“You cannot use our party to win election and then decamp, the NDC is not a special purpose vehicle for any human being no matter how big or small you are,” he said.
His remarks have since sparked reactions online, with Nigerians debating party loyalty, political defections, and the culture of decamping in Nigerian politics.
Social media reacts
Many Nigerians supported Dickson’s position, arguing that politicians often abandon the parties that helped them gain power.
“I am happy APC use and dump all those that decamped from Labour Party after winning election. They will think twice before decamping,” one user wrote.
Another user added: “This is true leadership. Everyone should be compelled to sign an agreement letter and no one leaves after winning election from NDC.”
Others, however, argued that political parties in Nigeria are often driven more by convenience than ideology.
“If a party is not a vehicle, what is it when people switch lanes after winning? Is it ideology or convenience?” another comment read.
Some critics also pointed out that political defections have long been part of Nigeria’s political system, regardless of party affiliation.
