Nollywood actress Victoria Inyama has issued a public apology following backlash over her recent comments about circumcision.

A few days ago, during a live Instagram conversation with media personality Daddy Freeze, Inyama shared that she was circumcised while living in the village with her grandmother. In the discussion, she described the experience in a way that suggested it was positive for her personally, even referring to it as something that made her feel empowered.

However, her remarks quickly sparked criticism online, with many social media users expressing strong disagreement and concern over her perspective.

In response to the backlash, the veteran actress released a video via Daddy Freeze’s Instagram page, where she apologized for her statements. She explained that she had spoken without full understanding of the wider issues surrounding the topic and only realized the seriousness after receiving calls and feedback from people close to her.

She added that after further conversations, including speaking with a midwife, she came to understand that her personal experience differs greatly from what many women go through in similar situations today. According to her, she was also informed by a prophetess that she had once spent a week in the hospital due to complications related to it.

Inyama admitted she was previously uninformed, said she is now learning more about the subject, and promised to be more careful and thoughtful in future discussions.

“A few weeks ago, on a talk show with Daddy Freeze, we were talking about issues like we always do, and I was just mentioning the root cause of certain issues and what I think or why I think it was done at that time. That’s where the FGM thing came up. Our ancestors thought that female circumcision would control the urges of women; unfortunately, I didn’t know the gravity of what it is in most places. FGM is bad. A midwife called me to explain this, and now I understand. It is nothing like what I went through; I never knew they stitched and thought it was just the basics. Even my prophetess in church, who is like my mother, told me she was in the hospital for a week over her episode, and she was only 15. For that to have happened to her and to everybody out there, I am sorry if my argument and comment came across as uninformed. Yes, I was totally uninformed about this FGM thing; now I am informed. So, now I am going to do better”.
