Nollywood actress Rita Edochie has criticized Judy Austin, the wife of her nephew Yul Edochie, following Judy’s comments questioning whether a woman without an Igbo traditional title should be allowed to wear the red cap.

Judy’s remarks, made a few days ago, sparked widespread reactions on social media and opened up fresh debates around cultural authority and tradition.

Reacting in a lengthy Instagram post, Rita Edochie dismissed Judy’s position on the matter and accused her of inconsistency, arguing that she lacked the moral standing to lecture others.

She wrote:

“Is it proper for a married woman in her husband’s house to take another married woman’s husband from her home? I just want to know. Aunty traditionalist, I refuse to take your words seriously while ignoring your actions. You can’t behave wrongly and still expect to teach morals.”

Rita further alleged that Judy had no credibility to advise others, claiming she was “still deeply involved in the same wrongdoing day and night.”

She continued:

“It’s not only disturbing but also a big insult to basic decency. That is complete hypocrisy. It’s hypocrisy at its peak.”

The veteran actress also questioned Judy Austin’s suitability as a role model, referencing past comments she had made about relationships and marriage.

“Sometime last year, the same person was advising women and young girls on how to keep their marriages, despite not being able to remain in her own legally recognized marriage… What meaningful advice can come from someone accused of breaking homes?”

Rita also dismissed Judy’s remarks on tradition, insisting she had no authority to speak on cultural values.

“Who exactly are you to lecture anyone on tradition? Isn’t it the same tradition that condemns infidelity? Even religious teachings say the same thing,” she added.

She ended her post with a pointed analogy:

“How can the referee be committing fouls and still be blowing the whistle on others? How can an examiner fail the very exam she is setting for others? The irony is so strong it deserves its own chieftaincy title. People should practice what they preach.”
