- Afrobeats artist Gabriel Oche Amanyi, known as Terry G, urges Nigerians to respect music legends, despite their current prominence in the music industry.
- The singer expressed disappointment over the swift dismissal of legendary artists by Nigerians, who often label them as “outdated.”
- Terry G highlighted that in Western countries, music icons are celebrated and their legacies are preserved, unlike the situation in Africa.

Veteran Afrobeats star Gabriel Oche Amanyi, popularly known as Terry G, has called on Nigerians to show greater appreciation for music legends, regardless of whether they’re still in the limelight.
In a recent statement, the “Akpako Master” voiced his frustration over how quickly Nigerians dismiss artists who paved the way, often branding them as “outdated” once they’re no longer trending.
Terry G drew a comparison with Western cultures, where music legends are honored, celebrated, and their legacies preserved over generations. He expressed concern that this lack of respect in Nigeria is a troubling trend that threatens the cultural foundation of Afrobeats.
He warned that if Africans, particularly Nigerians, continue to neglect their music pioneers, the genre risks losing its cultural depth even as its global popularity soars.
He said …
“I hear people say, ‘Your time don pass!’ and it sounds like brain damage.
“In the West, legends are respected for life. No one calls Jay-Z or Beyoncé outdated. Their impact is honored.
But here in Africa, especially Nigeria, we’re quick to discard our own. That’s why we believe our ancestors were evil, while Western ancestors are seen as gods.
“It’s time to break free from that mindset. If you don’t keep adding value to yourself and those around you, your worth will fade no matter how great you once were. We must do better.”
