Human rights acti]ist and social commentator Deji Adeyanju has sparked conversations online after speaking about Nigeria’s long-standing electricity challenges and what citizens truly expect from the government.
In a statement that has gone viral on social media, Adeyanju argued that many Nigerians are not demanding uninterrupted 24-hour power supply, but only basic access to electricity during important hours of the day.
According to him, citizens simply want power at night to sleep comfortably and in the morning to prepare for work before electricity is redirected to industrial areas.
“Nigerian don’t even want 24 hours light, can they even afford 24 hours light? Nigerians just want to come home at 8pm and meet light so they won’t sweat when they sleep and also meet the light by 7am so they can iron their cloths and then you can take the light and divert it to where factories are. Nigerians are not asking for much and they’re the easiest people to please. How can this be too much?”
His remarks have resonated with many Nigerians who continue to face unstable electricity supply despite repeated promises of reforms in the power sector.
Others noted that the statement reflects the frustration of citizens who believe their expectations from governance have become increasingly minimal.
