- Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe has identified governance failures as the primary cause of Nigeria’s electricity challenges, stating that technical issues represent only a small portion of the sector’s problems.
- He called for stronger cooperation among agencies to improve power supply nationwide.

Nigeria’s newly appointed Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, has said that poor governance remains the biggest challenge facing the country’s electricity sector, arguing that technical problems are only a small part of the wider crisis.
Tegbe made the remarks on Tuesday during his first official meeting with heads of agencies under the Ministry of Power, where he addressed the persistent issues affecting electricity generation, transmission, and distribution across the country.
According to the minister, while technical faults continue to impact power supply, the deeper problem lies in governance, coordination, and institutional inefficiencies within the sector.
“This sector faces serious challenges. Technical issues account for only a fraction of those challenges. The larger challenge is governance. No agency, no department, no unit can solve this sector’s problems alone,” Tegbe said.
The minister stressed the need for stronger collaboration among agencies and departments within the power sector, noting that sustainable improvements can only be achieved through coordinated efforts rather than isolated interventions.
His comments come amid growing public frustration over erratic electricity supply, with many Nigerians continuing to experience prolonged blackouts despite repeated reforms and investments in the sector over the years.
Tegbe recently assumed office following his appointment by President Bola Tinubu and has pledged to work with key stakeholders to address the long-standing challenges affecting the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry.
