On Tuesday morning, the privately owned radio station Fresh FM 106.9 FM in Ado, Ekiti State, prohibited playing music by Nigerian singer Azeez Fashola, better known by his stage name Naira Marley, on the station until further notice.

The radio station made this known in a post shared on its Instagram account (@freshfm1069adoekiti) and authored by Oluwaseunfunmi Williams, its Head of Production and Music Content.

The ban comes in response to criticism of Naira Marley and the passing of Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Oladimeji, also known as MohBad.

Earlier on Monday, Naira Marley songs were not allowed to be played on Splash FM 105.5 in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Mohbad, a former signee of Naira Marley at Marlian Records, passed away at the age of 27 last Tuesday, according to GISTLOVER Online. Fresh FM presenter, Baba Bintin, dies on way to office reports says

Fresh 106.9 fm has suspended the airplay of all songs and contents under the banner of Marlian Records,” it said. “This action comes in response to the public outcry from the general public trialing the death of Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba (Mohbad), the alleged victimization from different videos going viral, and the involvement of members of his previous record label (Marlian records)”.

In order to investigate Mohbad’s death, the Lagos State Police Command established a special investigative team on Monday. The team is due to deliver an interim report in two weeks.

The 13-member team’s mission, according to a document signed by the Lagos spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, and provided to The PUNCH, is “to unravel the circumstances surrounding the death of the victim, identify witnesses, culprits, if any, and any person that will be helpful to the investigative process and deploy processes and other technological tools to aid the investigative course in line with the relevant provisions of the Nigeria Constitution and the State Laws.”.
