Nigerian singer Joeboy has shared his thoughts on what he believes is damaging collaboration within the music industry, saying ego is becoming a major issue among artists.
Speaking during an interview on Cool FM Lagos alongside fellow musician Wizkid Chan, Joeboy explained that many collaborations lose their true essence because some artists approach them with a mindset of competition instead of teamwork.
According to him, he prefers working with artists he already has a good relationship with because genuine friendship helps remove unnecessary tension and pride from the creative process.
Joeboy noted that when he invites another artist onto a track, he actually wants them to stand out and contribute something unique to the song, stressing that this is the main reason for a collaboration in the first place.
Wizkid Chan also agreed with the singer’s opinion, revealing that ego is one of the biggest problems he encounters while working with other artists.
He explained that he likes to allow collaborators express themselves freely in the studio without trying to control their style or delivery, adding that he expects the same level of freedom in return.
The artist criticized situations where musicians attempt to dictate how featured acts should sound on a song, describing such behavior as harmful to creativity.
Wizkid Chan further emphasized that collaborations are meant to bring fresh energy and different talents into a record, not to create rivalry between artists.
He added that some musicians become insecure after hearing a collaborator’s verse and even go back to rewrite their own parts because they feel overshadowed, a habit he believes completely defeats the purpose of making music together.
