Tragedy struck Iluke Bunu community in Kogi State on Wednesday after armed bandits invaded Government Secondary School, killing three people, including a vice principal and a six-year-old child, during a failed kidnapping attempt.

According to reports, the attackers, said to be more than 40 in number, stormed the area on motorcycles at about 10 a.m. in what authorities believe was an attempt to abduct students and residents in Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area.

The Kogi State Police Command confirmed the incident, stating that a joint security team comprising police officers, military personnel, tactical units, and local vigilantes responded swiftly after receiving distress calls from the community.

Police spokesperson ASP Saliu Afusat disclosed that security operatives engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle, forcing them to flee into nearby bushes before they could carry out any mass abduction.

Authorities said there is currently no confirmed evidence that any student or resident was successfully kidnapped during the attack.

The victims who lost their lives were identified as Mr. Ganiyu Anifowose, Vice Principal of UBE Secondary/Primary School, Iluke; Mr. Sunday Jacob Alhassan, aged 70; and six-year-old Sunday Ayele.

Following the attack, the Commissioner of Police ordered intensive bush-combing operations and increased security patrols across the area to track down the fleeing suspects and prevent further attacks.
