“He Didn’t Mention Any Party” – Akpabio Defends INEC Chairman Amid Calls for Sack Over “Victory Is Sure” Comment

  • Senate President Godswill Akpabio has defended INEC Chairman Prof. Amupitan over a controversial “Victory is sure” statement, saying it was misinterpreted and not directed at any political party, despite calls for his removal.
  • However, Akpabio dismissed the criticism, clarifying that the statement had been taken out of context and did not reference any specific political party.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has defended the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Amupitan, following growing calls for his removal over a controversial statement.

The controversy stemmed from a resurfaced comment attributed to the INEC chairman, which read, “Victory is sure,” sparking speculation about political bias ahead of elections.

However, Akpabio dismissed the criticism, clarifying that the statement had been taken out of context and did not reference any specific political party.

“They brought out a tweet where the Amupitan says ‘Victor is sure’. He did not say, ‘Victory is sure for APC or PDP.’ He only said, ‘Victory is sure,’” Akpabio stated.

The remarks come amid increasing pressure from some quarters calling for the INEC chairman’s sack, with critics questioning the neutrality of the electoral body.

Despite the backlash, Akpabio maintained that there was no basis for the outrage, insisting that the comment was being misinterpreted.
