A fresh wave of fear has swept through Niger State following the abduction of 20 farmers, including pregnant women and children, by armed bandits during a routine rice harvest in the Shiroro Local Government Area.

The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon in Unguwan-Kawo, Erena Ward. The attackers struck farmers who were harvesting their crops and forcefully marched them away.

According to reports, the victims were seized just 500 metres from Erena town, where a military camp is located, raising serious concerns about security effectiveness in the area. A resident confirmed the incident, stating the farmers were surrounded by gunmen.

When contacted, the Niger State Police Command spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, stated that he would verify the incident.

This attack comes just five days after the state was rocked by the mass kidnapping of more than 300 students and staff of St Mary Catholic School in the Agwara area. Although school authorities confirmed that at least 50 abducted persons from the school had recently returned, the latest incident has deepened fears across the state.
