A Nigerian doctor has raised serious concern on social media about what he describes as a silent pandemic — the increasing number of young female students selling their eggs for money. According to him, many of these ladies, particularly undergraduates, are turning to fertility centres to donate their eggs in exchange for quick cash, driven by the harsh economic realities facing the country.

In a tweet that quickly gained attention, the doctor stated that the trend is growing rapidly but remains largely ignored by the public and authorities. He explained that while egg donation itself is not illegal, the frequency and desperation with which it is now being done among students are alarming.

In his words, “Our young ladies are selling their future children for peanuts due to harsh economic situations and everyone is silent.”

The tweet was accompanied by a photo showing a gloved hand holding a test tube that appears to contain a freshly retrieved egg, underscoring the medical nature of the issue.

With the current inflation and rising cost of living, many young women see egg donation as a survival strategy. Some fertility clinics reportedly offer between ₦100,000 and ₦250,000 per donation — a tempting amount for students struggling to pay fees, rent, or support their families.

Health professionals are now warning about the physical and psychological risks involved, especially when the procedure is repeated multiple times or done without adequate medical supervision. Some of the risks include hormonal imbalances, ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, long-term fertility complications, and emotional distress.
