40 American students claim Igbo ancestry, take traditional names in Enugu

In what was embarked upon as a cultural exploration tour, about 40 students and faculty members from Morehouse College Glee Club in Atlanta, USA, have claimed Igbo ancestry.

Following the declaration, the students who traced their ancestry to Igboland have taken new Igbo names befitting of their new status.

The name-giving ceremony held at the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), Enugu State. The students said they traced their ancestral roots through DNA tests conducted on them.

In attendance at the the occasion were Ohanaeze Ndigbo and traditional ruler of Ibagwa-Aka community in Igbo-Eze South Local Council of Enugu State, Igwe Hyacinth Eze.

The monarch congratulated the students and assured them that he is ready to provide lands for those who want to live in his community.

It was learnt that the cultural exploration tour which which will cover 3 cities (Lagos, Enugu and Abuja) started on June 26 and will end on July 9.
