Afropop musician Joeboy believes that Ayodeji “Wizkid” Balogun‘s recent statement on Afrobeats was taken out of context.

Wizkid recently said publicly that he does not want to be identified or acknowledged as an Afrobeats musician.

The founder of Starboy Entertainment announced this on Friday, March 15th, when revealing that his new album was complete and ready for release.

Wizkid urged fans not to anticipate an old version or an Afrobeats vibe on his upcoming album, Morayo, named for his late mother.

In a series of online rants, he asked fans who are looking forward to hearing the old Wizkid to stop downloading his new project and erase him from their playlist.

Furthermore, Machala, as he is affectionately known, has advised bloggers and other media outlets not to post or report on his album Morayo when it is ultimately released.

Wiz had written; “Album done! See you soon b*tches! And abeg if you like Pakurumo Wizkid, don’t download this new album. In fact, delete me from your playlist and your life!

“If you like Afrobeats, don’t download my album. I’m not a f*cking Afrobeats artiste. I am not Afro anything.”

In an episode of Cool FM’s Big Friday Day Show, hosted by Tacha, Joeboy argued that Wizkid was misunderstood. He stated that, contrary to popular assumption, the ‘Joro’ crooner was not abandoning Afrobeats, but rather wanted to avoid being hemmed in by the genre.

He said; “Wizkid’s statement is being misunderstood, he is not running away from Afrobeats. All we are saying is our identity is Afrobeats but please don’t box us because we can make other genres of music too.”
