Uganda’s 86-Year-Old Lawmaker Seeks Re-Election, Urges Constituents for Support

Veteran statesman and Second Deputy Prime Minister Gen. Moses Ali, now aged 86, has officially entered the race to defend his parliamentary seat for Adjumani West in Uganda’s 2026 general elections.

His declaration came after collecting nomination forms under the ruling NRM party—remarkably, he did so from the comfort of his car, underscoring both his status and health limitations

Known affectionately as “the Cock” for his commanding presence, Ali is no stranger to electoral politics. First elected in 1994, he has served in various high-level roles, including multiple terms as Deputy Prime Minister. Despite speculations about his age and stamina, he insists, “Some people speculated on social media that I was dead … I still have the energy to serve”

Ali has highlighted key campaign priorities: resolving the Apaa land dispute, constructing bridges on the Nile, and improving infrastructure like roads in his constituency

During a recent local event, he handed over 130 land titles and inaugurated community projects—symbols of his ongoing commitment

His bid has sparked mixed reactions
