Tragedy in Jos: 10 Dead as Gunmen Storm Community in NDLEA Uniforms

  • At least 10 people have been killed and several others injured after gunmen attacked Angwan Rukuba community in Jos North, Plateau State.
  • The attackers, reportedly dressed in NDLEA uniforms, stormed the area at night, opening fire on residents and causing chaos.

No fewer than 10 people have been confirmed dead, while several others sustained injuries following an attack by heavily armed gunmen in Plateau State.

The incident occurred on Sunday night when the assailants invaded Angwan Rukuba community in Jos North Local Government Area, throwing residents into panic and confusion.

Eyewitnesses said the attack happened at about 8pm when over 20 gunmen stormed Gari Yawaye, a suburb within the community, and began shooting sporadically, forcing residents to flee for safety.

The area, which houses several staff and students of the University of Jos, was thrown into chaos as the sound of gunfire disrupted the usual calm of the neighbourhood.

A resident, who spoke on the incident, revealed that the attackers were dressed in uniforms resembling those of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

“The attackers were dressed in NDLEA uniforms. They even bought some items from a trader before opening fire from within the shop. The shop owner was lucky to have escaped. Four others weren’t lucky,” he said.

The witness added that the gunmen moved through parts of the community on motorcycles, firing shots that left multiple casualties.

“By the time they left, 10 people had been killed while several others were injured either by stray bullets or while trying to escape.

“The pathetic thing is that the army and other security operatives came almost one hour after the gunmen left.”

As of the time of filing this report, efforts to reach the Plateau State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Alfred Alabo, and the spokesperson for Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP), Captain Nicholas Oteh, were unsuccessful, as calls to their phones were not answered.

The attack adds to growing security concerns in Plateau State, with residents calling for improved response from security agencies to prevent further loss of lives.
