President Bola Tinubu has directed the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, to immediately relocate to Kebbi State to monitor efforts to secure the release of the 25 schoolgirls recently abducted.

The directive, contained in a statement by Tinubu’s Special Adviser, Bayo Onanuga, instructs Matawalle, the former Governor of Zamfara State, to remain in Kebbi to oversee security operations.

The abduction occurred around 4 a.m. on Monday when gunmen seized 25 students from the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga town, Kebbi State.

Matawalle, who is expected to arrive in Birnin-Kebbi on Friday, has previous experience dealing with mass kidnappings during his tenure as Zamfara State Governor (2019-2023), including the 2021 abduction of 279 female students in Jangebe.

In response to the Kebbi incident and an attack on church worshippers in Kwara State, President Tinubu postponed his scheduled international trips to Johannesburg and Luanda.
