President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered that all national flags in Nigeria be flown at half-staff for seven days in honour of the late former president, Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday in London at the age of 82.
The announcement was made by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, who confirmed Buhari’s death and conveyed Tinubu’s heartfelt condolences.
In an official statement, President Tinubu described Buhari as “a patriot, a soldier, and a statesman”, praising his life of sacrifice and public service.
“As a mark of respect to our former leader, I have directed that all national flags fly at half‑staff across the country for seven days from today,” the statement read in part.
To further honour Buhari, Tinubu has also called for an emergency meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC), scheduled for Tuesday, where formal tributes will be paid.
The federal government has confirmed that full state honours will be accorded to the late leader, in recognition of his contributions to Nigeria’s development.
President Tinubu extended his condolences to Aisha Buhari, the former First Lady, and the entire Buhari family, praying for the repose of his soul and divine comfort for his loved ones.
