Shehu Sani, a former legislator from Kaduna Central, has responded to the kidnapping of eight National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) volunteers who were on their way to their camp in Sokoto State.
According to Gistlover, the victims were kidnapped by gunmen who were thought to be bandits along a highway in Zamfara State.
The corp members were abducted on Saturday as they boarded an AKTC bus to travel from Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, to Sokoto State via Zamfara State in order to do the mandated national service. Their bus was stopped along a highway in Zamfara.
A source who spoke to Vanguard said, “Apart from the eight corps members, the driver of the bus was also abducted.
“The corps members were offloaded (from the bus) and taken into the bush. The police have recovered the bus.
“They left here (Uyo) on Friday, and slept over in Abuja. It was when they were proceeding to Sokoto that they were kidnapped.”
Reacting to the incident, Sani lamented that it was an avoidable tragedy.
He urged the government to do everything in its power to ensure that the victims are set free.
According to him, “The news of the abduction of Youth Corpers by terrorists along the highway in Zamfara state is unfortunate; it’s an avoidable tragedy, knowing the dangers of that road, but we now have to deal with it. Everything must be done by the Government to secure the lives and freedom of the victims.”
