Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has sparked heavy backlash online after comments he made about terrorists and kidnapping operations in Nigeria resurfaced on social media.
In the viral clip, Gumi stated that terrorists require money from kidnappings to sustain their operations, claiming they are under pressure from government offensives.
“The terrorists need all the money they’re getting from kidnapping. It’s not like they are living luxurious lives; the government is putting too much pressure on them so they need money to finance their war machines,” he said.
The remarks immediately triggered outrage across social media platforms, with many Nigerians accusing the cleric of appearing to justify terrorism and criminal activities.
Several users questioned why security agencies had not taken action against him, while others argued that such comments were insensitive to victims of kidnapping and violent attacks across the country.
One user, @dom_N5, wrote, “This man is walking freely. What is DSS doing.”
Another user, @shocker0072, commented, “My question is why is this guy not behind bars already.”
Reacting to the statement, @PharmVictorious wrote, “This guy always have reasons to sympathize with his brothers. If a non-Nigerian listens to this man, they will definitely be confused who the victims are.”
Others also expressed concern about the growing insecurity crisis in Nigeria and the continued activities of kidnappers and armed groups terrorizing communities.
The controversial cleric has previously made headlines over his comments regarding negotiations with bandits and armed groups operating in northern Nigeria.
