Just hours before the royal wedding is set to begin, Queen Elizabeth II conferred new royal titles on groom Prince Harry and bride Meghan Markle. Once married, Meghan and Harry will officially become the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

The news was announced on the Royal Family’s official website on Saturday morning. It said:

“The Queen has today been pleased to confer a Dukedom on Prince Henry of Wales. His titles will be Duke of Sussex, Earl of Dumbarton and Baron Kilkeel.

Prince Harry thus becomes His Royal Highness The Duke of Sussex, and Ms. Meghan Markle on marriage will become Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Sussex.”

When Meghan and Harry’s engagement was first announced back in November 2017, it was revealed that the former actress would not become a princess when she got married.

Instead, The Telegraph reported that Meghan would receive a new title when she became a member of the royal family, and that this would be chosen by the Queen.

According to The Telegraph, “male members of the Royal family receive a title from the monarch on their wedding day, and the vacant title Duke of Sussex is regarded as the most likely choice for the Prince.”

As The Telegraph noted, Markle would be the first woman to ever hold this title.

When Kate Middleton married into the royal family, she was often referred to as Princess Kate in the media. But much like Meghan, Kate doesn’t hold the title of Princess.

Instead, Queen Elizabeth gifted the titles Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to Kate and William upon their marriage. Plus, as Good Housekeeping reports, “the young royals are also known as Earl and Countess of Strathearn in Scotland and the Baron and Baroness of Carrickfergus in Ireland.”

With her new title, Meghan Markle has officially transitioned from an actress on Suits to being a member of the British royal family.
