A 15 metre-long Humpback whale carcass has been removed from Paardevlei Beach near the Strand outside Cape Town, South Africa. The adult male carcass washed ashore yesterday, but the cause of it’s death is undetermined.
The city’s coastal manager, Gregg Oelofse, says whale carcasses wash ashore each year for any number of reasons, in this case it could also be as a result of old age.
Heavy machinery which was moved onto the beach early this morning during low tide lifted the heavy mammal onto a truck from where it’s being taken to the Vissershof landfill site.
This is what curious onlookers had to say: “The thing is it makes me a bit sad because it is a fabulous creature, it’s one of God’s greatest creatures and I don’t understand where the mouth is what it is and we are all just ignorant. This is one of the things we just see on TV actually we don’t know anything and it would be great if we can be educated about the sea life.”
