A Nigerian lawyer has sparked conversations online after criticizing the country’s judicial system over delays, adjournments, and what he described as unequal treatment of cases.

The lawyer lamented that while election petition matters are often concluded within a short time, ordinary citizens seeking justice face endless excuses and postponed sittings.

“Our judiciary is gradually failing us. I will spend thousands of naira to come to court, only to be told the court is not sitting. But when it is an election petition, the tribunal will be constituted and the case will be disposed of within three months. However, when it comes to delivering justice to the general public, there are excuses everywhere,” he said.

His statement triggered reactions from Nigerians, many of whom agreed that the justice system needs urgent reform.

@XyzComrade: “I’ve always wondered what happens to all the lawyers who graduated with distinction from Law School. Are they still the ones who keep silent in the face of injustice and end up as corrupt judges?”

@MrRio_87: “He ain’t lying. Our judiciary is a mess. They adjourn cases for no reason. Someone will spend 3-5 years on awaiting trial.”

@chuksayodele: “Many of these Judges now behave like the Lords they call them, but they forgot that our tax pays their salary, they must do their jobs well.”

@primeYoLegacy: “More reason I did not study law because what is the essence of it in a lawless country?”

@ijeomadaisy: “When well meaning Nigerians were screaming out their lungs, they were called wailers. What a shame.”

@bosas38: “This occurred in Lagos, and one can only imagine the situation in other states. A small claims court should ideally conclude proceedings within two months.”

@Mrpeter63: “lol you guys still study law in a lawless society lol 😂”

@surefiery: “Did he just say gradually failing us? The judiciary in Nigeria no longer exists! They have always failed us!”

@MEnigmati: “You guys do hold NBA conference every year. What do you all discuss there?”
