The government’s plans to demolish buildings between Abia Tower at the Motorway and Okpara sq (Ossah Road) for the expansion of the road have prompted the Abia State Government (ABSG) to start paying compensation to those impacted.

A crucial component of the modernization and expansion of the road leading into the state capital, transforming it into a 6-lane thoroughfare, is this action, which involves approximately 130 structures scheduled for demolition after compensation.

This statement was made today at a town hall meeting with stakeholders by Chaka Chukwumerije, the state commissioner for land.

He claimed that the payment was consistent with the state’s pledge to make restitution before demolishing property.

In order to ensure outreach to those affected, Chukwumerije said that extensive engagement with pertinent stakeholders had been going on for a while.

By saying, “We acknowledge the inconveniences people may face, hence the compensation and ample time provided for relocation,” he emphasized the government’s adherence to due process with a humane approach.

The commissioner claims that it was initially intended for the compensation to be given out in stages.

He did, however, disclose that Alex Otti, the state’s governor, had authorized a one-time transfer into the claimants’ accounts.

He said, “Equipment will be mobilized soon as compensation has begun. The Abia State Government is not rushing to demolish but is eager to develop Umuahia and the entire state.

Chukwumerije thanked the citizens and claimants for their assistance and emphasized that the state’s development is a continuous process.
