A Nigerian family has raised alarm over the continued detention of their teenage son, who has reportedly been in custody since 2023 following a police raid incident that the family insists was a case of mistaken or unjust arrest.
According to the family’s account, the boy was only 14 years old when he went missing in 2023. Days later, they received information that he had been found at a police station. What followed, however, has turned into a prolonged legal and emotional battle that has stretched for years without resolution.
The family claims the teenager was picked up during a police raid alongside several others, but while the rest of those arrested were released, he remained in custody. They further allege that he has since been held at Kirikiri Medium Prison, Mile 2, and has been appearing in court over a case in which even a police officer reportedly testified that he did not commit any offense.
Despite this, the case has continued to suffer repeated adjournments since 2023, with no clear resolution in sight.
The family also revealed that a ₦150,000 bail condition was set, but they have been unable to raise the money due to financial constraints. They expressed deep concern that their son, who is now approaching 17 years of age, has spent what should have been his formative teenage years behind bars.
In an emotional plea, the young man’s sister called for urgent intervention from authorities and the public:
Her words:
“My 14-year-old brother went missing in 2023 and we later got a call that he was at the police station. When we got there, he told us he was picked up during a police raid alongside other people. Everyone arrested with him was released except him.
Since then, he has been in Kirikiri Medium Prison, Mile 2, going to court over a case the police officer himself testified he committed no offense in. Yet the case keeps getting adjourned again and again since 2023.
They asked us to provide ₦150,000 for bail, but we cannot afford it. My brother was just a child when this started, and he will be turning 17 soon. Please, we are begging the authorities and anyone who can help to please intervene and help release my brother.”
