The World Health Organization has confirmed eight cases linked to a hantavirus outbreak, raising fresh global health concerns.
According to reports, Swiss health authorities identified a hantavirus case involving a passenger from the MV Hondius cruise ship. The passenger reportedly responded to a notification email from the cruise operator before presenting himself at a hospital in Zurich, Switzerland, where he is currently receiving treatment.
Health experts confirmed that the outbreak involves the Andes hantavirus strain, a rare but potentially deadly virus commonly transmitted through infected rodents, particularly via urine, saliva, or droppings.
The virus can cause severe flu-like symptoms, breathing difficulties, and in serious cases, life-threatening respiratory complications.
As of May 6, authorities confirmed that eight cases connected to the outbreak had been identified, while three cases were already laboratory-confirmed as hantavirus infections.
Laboratory testing was reportedly carried out by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases and Geneva University Hospitals, with support from Institut Pasteur de Dakar and Administración Nacional de Laboratorios e Institutos de Salud.
The WHO stated that, under the International Health Regulations (IHR), it is working with relevant countries to conduct international contact tracing and monitor individuals who may have been exposed.
The development has triggered concern online, with many social media users recalling the impact of past global outbreaks.
@LyfAcrosBorders wrote, “Lock down with Nigeria situation will be so bad.”
Another user, @echo_scroll, commented, “We are in for another long ride.”
Some users reacted humorously to the reports. @Ruffyking001 said, “Lassa fever oo hantavirus oo I go still chop that bread wey rat chop last night this morning.”
Meanwhile, @kaylah_osas expressed concern, writing, “Abeg oo, make he nor reach here o.”
