Lionel Messi has returned to Barcelona after spending the Christmas and New Year period back in his native Argentina.

The 30-year-old football star touched down in Spain on Tuesday and was accompanied by his family along with team-mates Luis Suarez and Javier Mascherano on a private jet.

Messi and his Barcelona team-mates were given permission to leave as the La Liga broke out for its annual winter break after their triumph in the El Clasico on December 23.

The Barca forward went back home to Rosario – a major port city situated 300 km up the Parana River from the capital, Buenos Aires – to enjoy some downtime with his family and see in the New Year.
