Nollywood actor Chinedu Ikedieze, widely known as Aki, has opened up about the difficult childhood he endured due to his small stature, which was caused by stunted growth.

In an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, the actor recalled how he was frequently ridiculed by children in his neighbourhood while growing up. He explained that the constant mockery followed him everywhere, and at times even came from within his own home, as his siblings would also use hurtful names during disagreements an experience he described as deeply painful.

According to Ikedieze, the relentless teasing took a serious toll on his mental and emotional well-being, leaving him in a very low place at some point in his life. He revealed that he once struggled with overwhelming feelings that made him contemplate ending his life due to the way he was treated and perceived by others.

He also highlighted the strong support he received from his mother during those challenging years. He said she consistently encouraged him, comforted him, and advised him to ignore the insults. Rather than giving in to despair, she urged him to concentrate on his education and work towards building a better future for himself, especially since he was unable to engage in physical labour like many of his peers.

He said: “I was constantly mocked by children in my neighbourhood. Even my siblings sometimes used the same hurtful names during arguments. The way people treated me pushed me into a very dark place. There was a time I felt the weight was too much to carry.

“I felt like society was being unfair to me. My mother stood by me when things were really hard. She told me to ignore the insults and focus on my education. I could not do the kind of physical work other boys were doing. Her advice gave me direction and hope for the future. Those words helped shape the path that led to my success.”
