Anambra Police Officer Caught in Viral Extortion Scandal

A disturbing video circulating on social media has exposed an alleged case of police misconduct in Anambra State. The footage, shared by Nigerian activist Harrison on X (formerly Twitter), shows a police officer attempting to force his way into a man’s home without a search warrant, accusing the occupant of being a cultist.

Harrison claimed the officer later extorted ₦1 million from the man before clearing him of the accusations.

Incident Sparks Outrage

According to Harrison’s narration, the officer did not initially identify himself as a member of the Nigeria Police Force. He reportedly tried to break in without wearing a uniform or showing an ID card.

When the man inside began recording the incident, the officer quickly displayed his police ID. In the video, he can be heard saying:

“We’re policemen, you’re a cultist.”

Extortion Allegations

Harrison accused the officer of robbing the man under the guise of law enforcement. He alleged that after collecting ₦1 million, the officer declared the accused man innocent.

“You went to steal from the man’s house. After the money you collected, you exonerated him,” Harrison stated.

Calls for Reform and Accountability

The incident has renewed calls for urgent police reform in Nigeria. Many citizens believe the lack of accountability allows corrupt officers to abuse their authority without consequence.

Advocates argue that:

  • Police officers should be mandated to present a warrant before entering any residence.
  • Body cameras and surveillance footage should be standard for law enforcement.
  • Cases of extortion should be prosecuted swiftly to restore public trust.
