Nigerian comedian and filmmaker Bright Okpocha, popularly known as Basketmouth, has stirred conversations on social media after advising Nigerians not to sacrifice their lives for the country.

The entertainer shared the message via his Instagram Story, urging citizens to prioritise their lives and personal survival rather than becoming temporary trends on social media.

According to Basketmouth, those who lose their lives in the name of patriotism are often remembered only briefly before public attention shifts elsewhere.

“Whatever you do in this life, don’t die for Nigeria. You’re more valuable alive than as a trending hashtag. A trending hashtag that might possibly last a few days.”

His statement comes just days after he encouraged people to remain grateful to God, noting that waking up healthy every morning is a blessing that should never be taken for granted.

The father of three also recently criticised society for celebrating failure while giving more attention to scandals than genuine achievements. He argued that many Nigerian blogs have made negativity their preferred content, while stories of excellence often receive little recognition.

Basketmouth’s latest remarks have generated mixed reactions online. While some social media users agreed with his view, saying self-preservation should come first, others maintained that patriotism and sacrifice should not be dismissed despite the country’s challenges.
