Vice President Kashim Shettima arrived in London on Monday, July 14, to coordinate the repatriation of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari’s body to Nigeria, following the elder statesman’s death on Sunday.

Acting on the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Shettima was accompanied by the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila. Upon landing in the UK, the Nigerian delegation was welcomed by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, and Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum.

The Vice President confirmed his arrival in London via a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday morning.

President Tinubu had earlier announced Buhari’s passing in an official statement and instructed Shettima to oversee all arrangements for the former leader’s return and burial.

In honour of the late President, Tinubu also declared a seven-day period of national mourning and ordered all national flags to be flown at half-mast across the country.

Buhari, who passed away while undergoing medical treatment for an undisclosed illness in London, served as Nigeria’s President from 2015 to 2023. He also led the country as a military Head of State between January 1984 and August 1985.

More information regarding the funeral proceedings is expected to be released soon.
