BREAKING: Rivers Gov’t Demolises Assembly Complex

On Wednesday, roughly ten bulldozers entered the Rivers State House of Assembly compound, starting the building’s demolition.

The state governor Siminalayi Fubara’s devoted legislators, led by the divisive Speaker Edison Ehie, called an early Wednesday session before the demolition got underway, according to PUNCH Online.

There have been rumors that Ehie stated during the meeting that the complex needed repairs because of the explosion that shook the building on October 30, 2023, and that the governor would arrange for somewhere else for them to sit while the repairs were being done.

The crisis rocking the Rivers State House of Assembly took a new turn on Monday with 27 members defecting from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party in the state to the All Progressives Congress, PUNCH Online reports.

The lawmakers blamed their defection to the APC primarily on internal PDP strife.

Legislators who support Nyesom Wike, the minister of the Federal Capital Territory, are reportedly the ones impacted.

The state APC chapter, however, has declared that it is willing to accept other PDP defectors in the state and has welcomed the departure of the 27 State House of Assembly members.

The spokesperson for the state APC Caretaker Committee, Chibuike Ikenga, stated this while speaking to our correspondent in Port Harcourt on Monday, saying, “We are happy about this (lawmakers defection), and we expect that others will join so that we can swell the ranks of the APC and run the state properly.  The defection of the lawmakers is a welcome development.”
