Nigerian football legend Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha has opened up about his approach to helping his family members, revealing that he has always focused on empowering them rather than creating dependency.
The former Super Eagles captain said he has supported his relatives by providing them with business capital and securing houses for them, but believes that the responsibility of succeeding ultimately lies with the individuals involved.
Speaking on his philosophy towards family support, Okocha explained that while he is willing to provide opportunities and a strong foundation, he cannot take ownership of the results of their personal decisions.
According to the football icon, helping loved ones should be about giving them the tools they need to succeed, not carrying the burden of their choices forever.
“I gave my family members business capital and bought them houses. If they fail, it’s none of my business,” Okocha stated.
The former midfielder, who enjoyed a remarkable career both locally and internationally, emphasized the importance of personal responsibility, noting that every individual must be willing to work hard and make the most of the opportunities they receive.
