Women in Elugwu Akwu, a community in Enugu State, have drawn public attention after staging a protest against the presence and activities of sex workers in their area.

Videos shared on social media showed groups of women marching through the community with placards and chanting messages aimed at what they described as growing social concerns within the neighbourhood.

The protesters said they were alarmed by the increasing visibility of commercial s3x work in the area, which they believe has become a source of tension for many households and residents.

They added that the situation, in their view, is negatively influencing relationships and family life in the community.

During the demonstration, some of the placards carried messages calling for immediate action and the removal of prostitution from the area.

The march attracted the attention of residents and passers-by, many of whom paused to watch the procession as it moved through the community.

One of the inscriptions seen during the protest read:

“Ashawo must go. End ashawo in Elugwu Akwu.”

The video clips quickly went viral on social media, sparking a wide range of reactions from Nigerians.

While some users supported the women’s stance and argued that communities have the right to protect their social values, others questioned the protest and urged a deeper conversation about economic hardship and the factors that may push individuals into such activities.

The incident has since fueled broader online debates about morality, family values, and social challenges in urban and semi-urban areas across Nigeria, with many continuing to discuss the concerns raised by the residents.
