Gospel singer Yinka Alaseyori has responded to the backlash trailing her recent remarks on the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oyo State.
The singer had earlier faced heavy criticism after she suggested that spiritual influences might be affecting the efforts of security agencies to rescue the kidnapped victims. Her comments came amid widespread concern over the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in the Oriire Local Government Area of the state.
Following the reaction, some Nigerians accused her of appearing to excuse or defend government institutions at a time when families were anxiously awaiting news of their loved ones.
In a new video shared on Instagram on Wednesday, Alaseyori expressed regret over how her comments were received, saying she was saddened by the public interpretation of her words.
According to her, she later realised that many people felt her remarks undermined the pain and frustration of affected families.
She explained:
“I did a video two days ago about the kidnapped children, touching on government, parastatals and every agency. But when I woke up yesterday, I found out that some well-meaning Nigerians were not happy about it, as I made them feel their voices are unheard.”
She maintained that it was never her intention to diminish anyone’s experience or pain.
Addressing mothers and relatives of the abducted victims directly, she offered an apology and asked for forgiveness.
“You know me too well that I would never make you feel like that. Mothers, do not be offended. I am sorry. I beg in God’s name. Please, forgive me. I would never think like that. Pardon and forgive me,” she said.
