A fresh controversy has erupted online after X user PIDOMNIGERIA, known by the handle @UNOFFICIALFACT, accused presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga of reacting too quickly to a viral video involving social commentator VeryDarkMan and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The debate began after Bayo Onanuga alleged that VeryDarkMan, popularly known as VDM, shared a fake audio clip of President Tinubu and stated that the activist should face legal consequences.
According to Bayo Onanuga:
“VDM needs to face the weight of the law for being the disseminator of a fake audio of Pres. Tinubu”
However, PIDOMNIGERIA pushed back against the allegation, claiming that one of the circulating videos had been manipulated with artificial intelligence-generated audio while another version was the original clip.
In the post, PIDOMNIGERIA wrote:
“Left video fake. Right video original.
The left video was doctored with an AI generated audio of president Tinubu.
The right video is the original video from VDM where he called out Tinubu’s promise of not to be re-elected for a 2nd term, if he doesn’t provide steady electricity for Nigerians, in his first 4 years.
Mr Bayo Onanuga @aonanuga1956, don’t be in a hurry to issue threats. You are a presidential spokesman, do your home work to verify.”
The statement quickly generated widespread reactions online, with many users sharing mixed opinions about misinformation, government communication, and the role of social media.
Reacting to the controversy, Michael Micah🪙 wrote:
