“I Couldn’t Even Take My Leave”- Man Exposes Life as Nigerian Bank Contract Staff

  • A Nigerian man has shared his experience as a contract staff in the banking sector, describing being overworked, under-treated, and even pressured to work while sick.
  • He contrasted this with a more supportive experience while working abroad, sparking debate on worker treatment in Nigeria.

A Nigerian man has sparked widespread discussion after sharing his experience working as a contract staff member in the country’s banking sector.

According to him, working conditions in Nigeria can be extremely demanding, with employees often overworked and under-treated. Despite performing well, he said he was neither promoted nor granted the full benefits he was entitled to.

“Although I was supposed to have one month leave, I struggled to even take two weeks at once,” he revealed.

He recounted a personal experience in which he fell seriously ill while at work and had to seek treatment. The following day, he said his supervisor questioned his absence and instructed him to return to work while continuing his medication.

“They asked me to come back with my medication and manage it while working,” he said.

The ordeal left a lasting impression, as he carried the mindset of overwork even after relocating abroad. He contrasted this with his experience working in a bank overseas, where his supervisor noticed he was unwell and told him:

“Why didn’t you speak up? You’re entitled to take proper sick leave instead of hiding your condition.”
