Businesswoman Chioma Amadi recently shared her disbelief after a new employee requested a ₦1.7 million salary advance just one month into her employment. The revelation, made on her X (formerly Twitter) account, has sparked discussions about workplace ethics and employee expectations.

In her post, Chioma detailed her reaction to the audacious request, emphasizing that the amount requested was disproportionate to the work done.

“The greed in this world s*kens me. Someone I hired last month just asked me for a salary advance of ₦1.7M… Not 500k, not 700k, not even something remotely proportional to the amount of time you’ve actually worked. ₦1.7M. Seventeen months of her salary,” she wrote.

Chioma also explained that the situation made her reflect on workplace culture and the professionalism of new employees.

“You’re one month into a job. I barely know you. You’ve barely done anything tangible yet… And somehow, in your mind, the most reasonable thing to do is to ask your employer to essentially bankroll the next year and a half of your life,” she added.

She highlighted that discipline, restraint, and professional boundaries should not be lessons that employees need to be taught.

“One month and you’re already treating your employer like a personal credit facility. And then people wonder why founders become extremely guarded over time,” Chioma wrote.

The entrepreneur noted that similar patterns were not seen when hiring more experienced talent from other regions, suggesting cultural factors may play a role.

“Sometimes, you just have to ask yourself where exactly we went wrong culturally,” she concluded.
