- Mahdi Shehu has criticized Nigerian political leaders for spending heavily on luxury vehicles and private jet charters while public hospitals lack essential equipment.
- He questioned the accountability of public funds and described the situation as unacceptable.

Public affairs commentator Mahdi Shehu has criticized what he described as irresponsible public spending by Nigeria’s political leaders.
In a post shared on X on Tuesday, Shehu condemned what he sees as a sharp contrast between expensive government perks and the deteriorating state of public healthcare across the country.
He highlighted the use of costly Toyota Prado jeeps by public office holders, noting that each vehicle costs about ₦230 million. According to him, such spending is troubling at a time when many government hospitals struggle to provide basic medical care.
“One Toyota Prado jeep can buy 20 sets of brand-new double compartment incubators with phototherapy light,” he wrote.
Shehu lamented that in some hospitals, newborn babies are reportedly being cared for on plastic chairs due to the lack of incubators. He also alleged that billions of naira have been spent on private jet charters for governors and members of the National Assembly while critical health infrastructure remains underfunded.
The commentator further claimed that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has yet to account for funds totalling nearly ₦600 trillion between 2017 and 2023.
“At a time when public office holders and politicians travel abroad for medical treatment. This is not democracy. This is governance inflicted never visited on any people on earth,” he stated.
