Nigerian fashion designer Veekee James has stirred conversation after expressing admiration for women who don’t rely on their husbands’ income but take charge of feeding their children and handling household expenses themselves.
During her appearance at the ‘LadiesTalk’ conference, the designer praised women who work diligently with their own efforts to support their families.
She remarked,
“What stands out the most is a woman who doesn’t wait for her husband’s money—she provides for her home, works hard with her own hands, and takes care of her husband, children, and staff.”
While some applauded Veekee for championing financial independence, many others criticized her comments.
Critics argued that her statements seemed out of touch and reflected her personal circumstances rather than a universal reality. Some suggested that her praise for women “feeding their husbands” may stem from her own experience of having to financially support her household.
One social media user commented, “She’s speaking from her own lack of privilege. Independence doesn’t always mean being the breadwinner.” Another added, “Many women depend on their husbands why glorify struggle as the only form of empowerment?”
Veekee James’ remarks have sparked widespread discussion online, fueling debates about financial independence, gender roles, and societal expectations.
