Nigerian comedian Freedom Okpetoritse Atsepoyi, popularly known as Mr Jollof, has shared his side of the story regarding a physical altercation with social media critic Martins Otese, also known as VeryDarkMan, that occurred on an airplane on Monday, November 17.
In a video posted on his Instagram page, Mr Jollof issued an apology to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), his employer Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, his family, fellow passengers, and Nigerians at large for engaging in a public fight.
He explained that he acted in self-defense after VDM approached him aggressively, adding that the social media critic received several blows during the confrontation.
“I sincerely apologize to the NCAA, United Nigeria Airlines, and all the passengers on board. I was only defending myself. I’m sorry if this incident caused any delays. This is not who I am, and it won’t happen again,” Mr Jollof said.
Addressing his family and employer, he added, “To my wonderful wife, I know you are proud of me. To my children, I apologize Daddy won’t do this again. And to my boss, I am deeply sorry; this behavior is not representative of me.”
Describing the events leading to the clash, Mr Jollof said that VDM began provoking him while he was seated. According to him, VDM made threatening remarks, prompting him to warn, “Behave yourself.” When VDM later approached him, Mr Jollof defended himself, which escalated into the fight.
On the reason he bit VDM on the chest during the altercation, Mr Jollof explained, “I acted like Mike Tyson in a fight, using whatever means I had to protect myself. When someone comes at you with a knife in a gunfight, you use whatever is necessary.”
