Tourists and worshippers at St Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City were left horrified on Friday morning, October 10, after a man defiled the Altar of Confession, one of the holiest sites in Catholicism, by urinating on it in full view of hundreds of people.
Reports say the man bypassed security barriers around 9:30 a.m. and climbed to the altar believed to rest above the tomb of Saint Peter before committing the act in front of stunned worshippers.
Plainclothes officers quickly apprehended him after he made an obscene gesture toward the crowd. The Lepanto Institute has since called for the altar to be reconsecrated, describing the incident as a grave desecration.
The Vatican has launched an investigation, and the Basilica was temporarily closed for cleaning and a security review. This marks another disturbing episode following previous acts of vandalism at the historic site.
